The rape of Europa

A story of abduction, rape, colonization and violence is depicted heroic throughout art history.  ‘Heroic’ images are the cradle of our western society. The ruthless violence in the moments is forgotten, cooperation to greater power becomes a sign of harmony.

In this painting, I create a space where the abuse and power relations are clear.

If Zeus and Europa looked like this, would they still be sculpted outside our parliament buildings?

Would it still scream the silent message to be submissive to greater power?

Would it still scream to interpret ruthless, unjust violence as heroic?
